These tips can help make a difference in protecting the oceans.

Did you know that oceans are our greatest resource since they cover more than half the earth’s surface? Most living things depend on them for food and to stabilize climate patterns. But according to UCSB and NOAA, over 40% of the oceans have been heavily affected by humans’ daily activities. We often underestimate how the little things that we do can greatly affect our oceans. The good thing is there are simple things we can do to make a big difference in the future of our oceans.

1. USE FEWER PLASTIC PRODUCTS
It is time to reduce our reliance on single-use plastics such as water bottles, straws, and to-go food containers, which are known to be the greatest threat to our marine ecosystem. According to the World Wildlife Foundation, 8 million tons of plastic are dumped into the ocean each year, meaning they could have killed (and ended up killing) thousands of marine animals yearly.

What can you do? Reduce the use of disposable packaging and products. Instead, you can buy in bulk, use cloth grocery bags, pack snacks in nice reusable containers, or have your drinks in a tumbler bottle. These simple things are environmentally friendly while helping you save money.

2. KEEP THE BEACHES CLEAN
As you have a fun picnic with your family and friends, be responsible enough and pick up your trash. Never leave rubbish near the beach as it can be washed up into the ocean and endanger thousands of marine life.

3. REDUCE CARBON FOTPRINT
Minimize the effects of climate change on the ocean by minding your energy consumption at work and home. Your carbon footprint plays a broad role in burning fossil fuels and producing greenhouse gasses, known to be one of the greatest threats to our ocean.

You can do your part to reduce your carbon footprint by unplugging unused electronics, using public transport more often, or, if you live close to the grocery store, you can walk or ride your bike.

4. DON'T PURCHASE ITEMS THAT ENDANGERS MARINE LIFE
Did you know that certain products harm fragile coral reefs and marine life? And you can minimize the exploitation by not purchasing items such as coral jewelry, tortoiseshell hair accessories, and even shark products.

5. LEARN TO LOVE THE OCEAN

Educating ourselves more about the ocean is important, as it will help us have a more caring approach to marine life. Instead of using mass consumption, you will become more aware of sustainable alternatives.
